2025 IF I WERE MAYOR CONTEST INFORMATION

Mayor Backus invites local students to share their ideas about what they would do if they were Mayor of Scappoose.

  • What would you do if you were the Mayor?
  • How would you improve life for the community?
  • What ideas do you have for the future? 
  • How would you change the world?

Here is how the contest works...

The Oregon Mayors Association (OMA) “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” Student Contest, is open to local students enrolled in school or being home-schooled for the 2024-2025 school year.

There are three categories:

  • Elementary School (grade 4-5) - Posters Contest (Photo of poster can be PNG, JPEG, or PDF files)
  • Middle School (grade 6-8) - Essay Contest (Word, PDF, PowerPoint or online essay format)
  • High School (grades 9-12) - Digital Media Presentations (Videos only, MP4 or online video format)

Local winners will receive a Fred Meyer gift card and lunch with Mayor Backus.

Completed submissions must be received by 4pm on Friday, March 7, 2025. Items can be submitted by email to sreeves@scappoose.gov or in person at Scappoose City Hall located at 33568 East Columbia Avenue.

Statewide winners and their mayors will be notified shortly after the judging takes place. First place winners and their parents will be invited to attend the Awards Luncheon held during the OMA Annual Conference in Baker City at the Geiser Grand Hotel on August 16, 2025 where they will receive their prizes – a check for $500.00! Second and third place prizes will be sent to mayors to present to the winners locally.

All completed submissions will be reviewed at a future City Council meeting. Winners will be notified prior to the meeting.
