If I Were Mayor Contest information ~ Deadline 5:00pm on March 9, 2026
2026 IF I WERE MAYOR CONTEST INFORMATION
Mayor Backus invites local students to share their ideas about what they would do if they were Mayor of Scappoose.
What would you do if you were the Mayor?
How would you improve life for the community?
What ideas do you have for the future?
How would you change the world?
Here is how the contest works...
The Oregon Mayors Association (OMA) “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” Student Contest, is open to local students enrolled in school or being home-schooled for the 2025-2026 school year.
There are three categories:
Elementary School (grade 4-5) - Posters Contest (Photo of poster can be PNG, JPEG, or PDF files)
Middle School (grade 6-8) - Essay Contest (Word, PDF, PowerPoint or online essay format)
High School (grades 9-12) - Digital Media Presentations (MP4 or online video format)
Local winners will receive a Fred Meyer gift card and lunch with Mayor Backus.
Completed submissions must be received by 5:00pm on Monday, March 9, 2026. Items can be submitted by email to sreeves@scappoose.gov or in person at Scappoose City Hall located at 33568 East Columbia Avenue.
You can find all the contest materials below, including, informational flyers, contest information, submission forms, and a short document about what Mayors do. Application packets are also available at Scappoose City Hall ~ 33568 East Columbia Avenue, Scappoose.
Prizes for first, second, and third-place winners of the Statewide competition are dependent on funding available. Prizes in 2025 included $500.00 for first-place winners, $300.00 for second-place winners and $100.00 for third-place winners.
All completed submissions will be reviewed at a future City Council meeting. Winners will be notified prior to the meeting.
